Extra Unit-Speed Machines Are Almost as Powerful as Speedy Machines for Flow Time Scheduling

چکیده
We study online scheduling of jobs to minimize the flow time and stretch on parallel machines. We consider algorithms that are given extra resources so as to compensate for the lack of future information. Recent results show that a modest increase in machine speed can provide very competitive performance; in particular, using O(1) times faster machines, the algorithm SRPT (shortest remaining processing time) is 1-competitive for both flow time [C. A. Phillips et al., in Proceedings of STOC, ACM, New York, 1997, pp. 140–149] and stretch [W. T. Chan et al., in Proceedings of MFCS, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2005, pp. 236–247] and HDF (highest density first) is O(1)-competitive for weighted flow time [L. Becchetti et al., in Proceedings of RANDOM-APPROX, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 2001, pp. 36–47]. Using extra unit-speed machines instead of faster machines to achieve competitive performance is more challenging, as a faster machine can speed up a job but extra unit-speed machines cannot. This paper gives a nontrivial relationship between the extra-speed and extra-machine analyses. It shows that competitive results via faster machines can be transformed to similar results via extra machines, hence giving the first algorithms that, using O(1) times unitspeed machines, are 1-competitive for flow time and stretch and O(1)-competitive for weighted flow time.

A comparison of algorithms for minimizing the sum of earliness and tardiness in hybrid flow-shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines and sequence-dependent setup times
In this paper, the flow-shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines at each stage as well as sequence-dependent setup times under minimization of the sum of earliness and tardiness are studied. The processing times, setup times and due-dates are known in advance. To solve the problem, we introduce a hybrid memetic algorithm as well as a particle swarm optimization algorithm combine...
متن کاملHeuristic approach to solve hybrid flow shop scheduling problem with unrelated parallel machines
In hybrid flow shop scheduling problem (HFS) with unrelated parallel machines, a set of n jobs are processed on k machines. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the HFS scheduling problems with unrelated parallel machines has been proposed to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan). Since the problem is shown to be NP-complete, it is necessary to use heuristic methods to ...
متن کاملNew Heuristic Algorithm for Flow Shop Scheduling with 3 Machines and 2 Robots Considering the Breakdown Interval of Machines and Robots Simultaneously
Scheduling is an important subject of production and operations management area. In flow-shop scheduling, the objective is to obtain a sequence of jobs which when processed in a fixed order of machines, will optimize some well defined criteria. The concept of transportation time is very important in scheduling. Transportation can be done by robots. In situations that robots are used to transpor...
متن کاملFuzzy Programming for Parallel Machines Scheduling: Minimizing Weighted Tardiness/Earliness and Flow Time through Genetic Algorithm
Appropriate scheduling and sequencing of tasks on machines is one of the basic and significant problems that a shop or a factory manager encounters; this is why in recent decades extensive studies have been done on scheduling issues. One type of scheduling problems is just-in-time (JIT) scheduling and in this area, motivated by JIT manufacturing, this study investigates a mathematical model for...
متن کاملFinite Horizon Economic Lot and Delivery Scheduling Problem: Flexible Flow Lines with Unrelated Parallel Machines and Sequence Dependent Setups
This paper considers the economic lot and delivery scheduling problem in a two-echelon supply chains, where a single supplier produces multiple components on a flexible flow line (FFL) and delivers them directly to an assembly facility (AF). The objective is to determine a cyclic schedule that minimizes the sum of transportation, setup and inventory holding costs per unit time without shortage....
